In collaboration with Thomas Randall-Page, we are currently working on the renovation and interior design of this relatively modern, prefabricated home on the Isle of Skye. Originally built in 2011 and named An Tigh Maiseach, which in Scottish Gaelic means ‘The Beautiful House. The off-the-shelf design didn’t quite match up to the name, but its position overlooking Loch Dunvegan absolutely does.

Early on we decided not to expand the house outwards, but through a careful process of observation, discussion, drawing and modeling, we began to refine what was found, working within the current envelope, making better use of the space, reconnecting the interior with the landscape and precious Scottish light.

The apertures through the existing envelope are reconsidered, a conversation between the newly created spaces and vast landscape beyond. Expansive new windows provide connection between the inside and the open landscape, whilst old openings are closed, bringing more intimacy to the internal spaces.

The interior layout of the house is replanned throughout, with a warm palette of natural materials, a new wooden mezzanine over the double height kitchen and living room, a large circular window to the bedroom framing the picturesque MacLeod’s Table in the distance.
